Escape from Wych Wood, 10, 7 and 4k races

Night Race

10, 7 and 4k races

Multi Terrain Races

Escape from Wych Wood takes place on the outskirts of Taunton on the edge of the Black Down Hills. Our race HQ for the night is Taunton and Pickeridge golf club. From here the race departs through the golf course running towards Wych Wood. A Forestry England Wood on the edge of the Black Down hills and on part of the Herepath trail.

At the heart of Wych Wood is a lake that while looking natural has little business being there as was created as a duck decoy pond for the Orchard Portman estate. However the hills proved too steep and it became an ornamental boating lake instead. Now it’s used by Taunton Anglers and you can see the dam used to create it from some of the footpaths through the wood. The woods also host a recently discovered Hill fort in Orchard Wood. While Lime Kiln remains were found near Lime Ridge Wood. Now the wood is managed by Forestry England and is accessible to the public except forestry operations are taking place.

The details

15th Feb 2020

Race HQ is by Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club TA3 7BY

The 10k course utilises several bits of the course multiple times. and could be described as a run out to a circuit with a small lap before a big lap which adds in the hill fort before returning to home. While the 7 and 4k races are effectively single lap.  There will also be an aid station on the course visited by the 10k race 3 times, the 7k twice and the 4k once.  The course will be well marked with plenty of signs with reflective elements, reflective course markings and lights to guide you around.

The course starts and finishes at the golf course. Spectators can watch finishers running in from the warmth of the golf club bar and restaurant with it’s big patio doors overlooking the course.  DO think about wearing something distinctive so your friends and families can pick you out.  There will be a prize for the best dressed runner.

Terrain varies from the tarmac path through the golf course – to gravel and dirts paths in the woods.

You will need to wear a head torch to race and carry spare batteries or a backup torch, a limited number of which will be available to hire or buy on the night.  We recommend emailing to book.

All finishers will receive a finishers medal for the 10, 7 or 4k.

Refreshments are also available at the end of the race.

Race Parking & Facilities

Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club is a modern golf club with a well equipped Club House. There is bar and restaurant and a limited but well priced menu will be on offer for the event.

It also has excellent changing rooms with showers. Why not run, clean up and join friends for a drink and some food afterwards.

closest car park

We strongly recommend car sharing for the event for numerous reasons but parking at the golf course is plentiful and only a short walk from the race HQ and start line. Just be careful to watch for the turn into the golf course, the lane after it is narrow and cars can struggle to get back out if one or more follows you down the wrong way.

Recce

Runs

Recce Runs for this race will be announced once we have a date for the race. These are free but you do need to book a place & bring a head torch.  If bringing a head torch is a struggle let us know in advance and we’ll try and help. Shoes with a bit more grip than average may be a good idea but there’s only one area that may get seriously muddy.

The plan is to do one approximate lap of the course with some other bits thrown in dependent on the needs of who joins us. Probably looking at a minimum of 4 miles and we will make sure the groups regroup and/or double back. The idea is more to get comfortable running with a head light on trail on a social run.

Dogs are ok if you have public liability insurance to run with them (please message us to let us know) and so are children 13 and above if accompanied on the run by a responsible adult.

We hope you can join us
